Another Overeating Day

To cope with winter depression, I lost my control over food. :kebored: Or am I just obsessed with chow? I have been overeating almost daily, piling on whipped cream desserts and tons of carbohydrates. As a result of excessive food consumption and the lack of exercise, my body feels heavy and my mind feels dull. I really miss the feeling of starving empty stomach during the juice detox program.

Last night, I made an effort to prepare raw salad for dinner. I warned Karan in advance not to tempt me with any other goodies.

When I was preparing the salad, Karan popped a frozen pizza into the oven. &$%$$%#$# :ohbeatit:

Garlic Chicken Pizza in the Oven... hmm... smells so good

Finishing off the pizza with fresh avocado slices, red pepper flakes, goat cheese and drizzled extra virgin olive oil all over.

Since I have trouble resisting any tasty food, even my dog could guess what happened next. Oh well, I did skip the dessert. :)

Holy Crabs!

Crabs

Chilli Crabs

I love crabs. I can’t get fresh dungeness crabs here in Iowa, so I cooked this dish with king crab legs.

Ingredients: Ginger, green scallions, garlic, chillies, eggs, tomatoes, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, salt, pepper, oil

Simply stir-fry all ingredients with the crabs.

Holy crabs! They are unbelievably tasty!

Stir-fry Spinach

Too bad I didn’t have any good bread to soak up every last drop of delicious sauce. I did cook some jasmine rice and stir-fried some spinach to go with the crabs. Yummo!

Indian Sweets

[Friday]

Karan left for Orlando today for work.

See what he left behind:

Boxes of fresh Indian sweets!!!! Muahahahaha.

Karan’s favorite: Pistachio Barfi

My favorite ladoo: cardamon flavor with nuts

I gained five pounds last winter. I am not going to make the same mistake this year. Last year I had four ladoos a day. This year, I will cut down to two. Two ladoos a day is the perfect prescription to beat winter blues. :) Wait, there are only twelve ladoos in a box. Awww…. poor Karan.

The shiny stuff on the barfi is edible silver foil, called varakh. It adds glitter to Indian sweets. Although varakh is edible, I wonder if it would accumulate in our bodies and become toxic? Once consumed, does the metal stay in our body? Is it safe for kids? I don’t have the answer. If anyone is more knowledge on this issue, please share your thoughts. :)

Chicken Rice

I was hungry for chicken rice; Singapore Chicken Rice, to be more specific.

I have never cooked chicken rice before. There was no need. It’s a very popular dish in Malaysia, so it’s available everywhere.

Now that I am abroad, it’s hard to find authentic chicken rice that has the flavor of homeland.

Thoughts become things.

The more I thought about this dish, the more I wanted to make it a reality. A Malaysian friend told me that she actually made this dish before and it’s totally do-able!

That was a huge encouragement. So, I looked up the recipe online and went for it.

http://www.grouprecipes.com/6837/singapore-hainanese-chicken-rice.html

I had all the ingredients and followed the recipe exact (well, by exact I meant I eyeballed the measurements). It’s not like baking a cake, so nothing has to be that exact. :)

I added sesame oil to the chicken after it was cooked and cut. Sesame oil has a unique fragrance and taste that I like.

I also stir-fried bean sprout chinese style to go with the chicken.

I must tell you that the result was surprisingly good, considering that was the first chicken rice from my kitchen!

If you want to improve your cooking skill, just live abroad for a few years. :)

The best part was sharing the dish with my Malaysian friends. What a happy day.

Dim Sum Time

6/22 Oakland, California

What’s for brunch on a Sundy morning in Chinatown?

Dim sum of course!! That’s no brainer.

We asked around for the best dim sum place. Two out of three people recommended Legendary Palace.

Travel Tip: Always ask the locals for restaurant recommendation. Don’t just ask one, ask a few people.

It was peak lunch time and Legendary Palace was packed! So, do come here early (we overslept… :P).

We waited 20 minutes for our table. While waiting, we rushed next door to buy some fruits (in season bing cherries, lychees, etc) and pastries to be consumed later of the day. When it comes to food, I always think ahead.

Karan can’t get enough of the red bean buns.

A box of goodies for only $3.50

It was definitely worth the wait for our table. There were restaurants nearby with no lines. You order the dim sum off the menu. In my opinion, you gotta order dim sum off the dim sum cart for an aunthentic dim sum experience.

One of my favorite desserts is Tofu Flower. It’s silky custardy tofu in sweet syrup. I prefer to eat it warm. Some people prefer to eat it chilled.

Server: “We call this Tofu Brain in Beijing.”

Karan’s comment on Tofu Flower: “Hmm… Weird.”

Four dim sum steamers and a dessert later, we were full!

Our bill came to $17. Not bad, since we really enjoyed the food.

Come with your family and friends for some quality bonding time around the table! It’s a Chinese tradition that should be cherished forever.
